• Daryl F. Gates was the chief of the Los Angeles Police Department from 1978 to 1992. He is considered the "father of SWAT" and founded DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) to educate children about the dangers of drug abuse. After the Rodney King beating and subsequent riots, evidence of systematic racism in the LAPD led to his resignation.
